"Their second full length LP release (after the Severe Pig LP) and the second release of the newly formed Musical Tragedies. Two side long pieces (one called birth, one called death), this release is supposed to offer an audio life- span. Experimental in nature, it features performances by Joseph B. Raimond, Jello Biafra, Bernard H. Worrick, Asmus Tietchens (who did not like how the LP turned out!), Peter Schuster, Michael Wurzer, Ralf Lexis, Theodor T. ThrongoMob, John Eberly, JoAnn Raimond and Denise Pawlak. Recorded Oct. 88 - Jan. 89 at Two Car Garage Studios, Nürnberg. Released July 5th, 1989, to coincide with a DWM art exhibit at the Komm in Nürnberg. Cover art green and black printing, featuring a series of pictures made into real, solvable mazes. Edition of 500 copies, including poster for the art exhibit."

"In 1984 appeared the LP "Our Debut." The Musical theme of this production was the direct adoption of the current impulse of a number of underground and independent bands longing for "breakthrough," "commercial success," "hit." Accordingly the music on "Our Debut" should sound anxious, willful, intense, ambitious, pushy, and at the same time commercial.

The counterpart appeared two years later. The LP "six" (1986) was the opposite: "uncommercial," "autonomous," "experimental" and "maladjusted." Here not popular but electronic music is suggested.

In fact, the music of both LPs developed at the same time in a studio in Düsseldorf. Both albums are constructed so that they correspond to one another in music, text and arrangement and comprise a unity if one plays them at the same time from the first piece on, on two record players with their respective A- or B-sides. The parallel pieces are the same length to the minute, from one track to the next, and offer a variety of textual, musical and semantic interactions.

By playing both LPs together the invisible fifth LP, an immaterial LP emerges in the mind of the listener."

Three early cassettes from Theatre Of Ice. Although what came after has a more 'typical' gothic rock sound, these three tapes are much more on the experimental side. Heavy Chrome-damage abounds, always a good thing.

"Theatre of Ice were an early Deathrock (Gothic rock) band that formed in the Nevada desert in December 1978. Initially formed to record a soundtrack for a horror movie, the members instead evolved into what some claim was the first Deathrock band. Owing more initially to experimental groups such as Throbbing Gristle, Suicide and Chrome, the band also cited bands as diverse as Iron Butterfly, Blue Öyster Cult, The Moody Blues and Roxy Music as major influences. Theatre of Ice brought a modern approach to gothic-horror themes by tackling the idea of an underground spook show in the contemporary world."

Very interesting and eclectic thematic compilation from Hybryds' 3Rio Tapes label. Beautifully mixed by Magthea, this almost plays more like a sound collage than a compilation. From noise and various flavors of experimental to gay love songs (literally), not to mention the obligatory porn samples aplenty. This was released in 2 editions, a c90 with art booklet (unfortunately missing from my copy) and later as a c60 minus a few tracks.

RRRadio was a monthly 'spontaneous record/tape collage with improvisational music accompaniments' on WZBC in the late 80's using tape contributions from various artists (such as Asmus Tietchnes, Frans DeWaard, Esplendor Geometrico, Human Flesh, Illusion Of Safety, P16.D4, PBK, Runzelstirn & Gurglestock, John Wiggins...), as well as RRR mail order customers.

"RRR extents an open invitation to all interested individuals to participate in RRRadio by sending backing tapes, tape loops, environmental recordings, unfinished works, extraneous noises, etc * basically. Anything that can be used for collage purposes. RRR promises to send a dub of the show using your contribution."

Here are 2 complete shows. Outside of Ron Lessard & Wha, as well as a certain sporadic music blogger, contributors to these particular shows are unknown, Occasioanlly chaotic, often amusing, but never just a bunch of random noise. I particularly like RRRadio 34, but some nice moments throughout each.

"Metaphonics is the word that I coined for that family of sounds which are intended to function on a shall we say sacred level and which possess the ability to alter the consciousness and/or induce a Trance state in a group or individual.

It is recommended that these CD's be listened to in total darkness. Usually the easiest way to accomplish this is by using some sort of scarf etc. to cover your eyes. If you can get a room completely light proofed that is the best, because then you can listen with your eyes open.

Over the years I have been presenting my live music in just such environments and here's a bit about that [from program notes]:

These sessions occur in the complete dark with the participants lying on mats. Their purpose is to produce a synaesthetic experience in the listener. In this case people are seeing what they are hearing. People report a variety of psychic / emotional experiences focused through a range of visualizations; from abstract firework-like flashings to geometric imagery to cartoony type things to visions which are as representational as if they were a dream or guided meditation."

Originally part of the early 80's industrial/power electronics scene, French artist Pacific 231 (Pierre Jolivet) soon moved on to a more atmospheric and experimental territory. This tape consists of two pieces. Side A is a bit noisier with trumpet(?), voice, and delay. Side B is more rhythmic with voice, bass, chimes, and choral voices. Very meditative.

"Thee processed trumpet is from a recording made in 1963 ov a US Marine Trumpeter trying to play reveille whilst high on a dose ov LSD during secret trials ov it's effectiveness as a 'psychomimmetic' weapon.

Instruments used apart from thee trumpet tape to generate initial sounds prior to heavy processing are all ritual instruments. They include Tibetan Bowls, Nepalese Temple Bells, African Goat Skin Drums, and an array of percussion from thee four directions ov B-Earth. No electronic or amplified instruments were used.

In particular, Z'ev played all drums, Gini played all violins.

Thee Self-imposed brief was to create a musick that had thee same psychoactive trance effects as ancient ritual musicks first generated on thee original instruments used, butter regenerated through a purely coumtemporary system ov effects."

This was a double cassette that came wrapped and sealed in tar. You had to break open the package to get to the tapes. 'peace in our time' was re-released on it's own in 1988 as a single cassette in 1988, and then on CD in 1993.

"The blackhumour audio project had its beginnings in early 1982 with the first few experiments I was doing on my teac 4-track reel-to-reel recorder. The resulting early pieces were not so good, but some of the pieces which were done with my then audio-partner, somebody else, were successful. Two of these pieces, 'murder', and 'trade and commerce', are included in the retrospective of early bh work, 'radical positive' (banned productions). This release also shows the evolution of the blackhumour approach away from treatment/effects techniques of any kind, such as equalization, reverberation, flanging, echo, etc., and the choice made by blackhumour to use as its sole sound-construction source the use of 'found-object' human voice only, with the exclusion of such tape techniques as speed-masking (speeding up or slowing down the sound of the voice) or back-masking (the notorious technique of playing the voices backwards). Since 'snakes in an atheist's grave' (1984), NO blackhumour piece has used anything other than found object (spoken) human voice and editing techniques..."

"NO blackhumour piece has used anything other than found object (spoken) human voice and editing techniques. (since 1986, digital editing has been included, thanks to inexpensive digital sampling.) I wanted the sound source to be absolutely basic. The human voice speaking was about as basic as i could get. The rationale being that we are constantly hearing speech, whether it is from others, or simply the sound of our own voices in our ears."
